Slowly but surely, Dr. Thomas Skafidas has been making his way down to Georgia to be part of our team at Atlanta Orthodontic Specialists. In the 1970s, he attended college at the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Dental Medicine. Then, he made it a little further south to North Carolina to do his residency at the Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg. Another residency in the 1980s at Emory University in Atlanta brought him even closer to his final destination as part of our practice. We are so glad he finally made it here.
Teaching Experience
Dr. Skafidas brings a unique perspective to Atlanta Orthodontic Specialists because of his vast teaching experience in the dental and orthodontic world. He’s taught at the US Army General Practice Residency Hospital Dentistry Faculty, Forsyth Technical Institute, and served as Assistant Clinical Instructor at the Orthodontic Residency Program at Emory University. He was also the director for the College of Diplomates Residency Program at Emory University, and was on the teaching faculty for the Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics Courses, both national and international.
Leadership
Dr. Skafidas has held numerous prestigious leadership positions throughout his illustrious career. He has served as Head Resident in the Emory University Orthodontic Program, President of the Emory Orthodontic Alumni Association, President of the Georgia Association of Orthodontists, State Director of the Southern Association of Orthodontists, and Delegate/Alternate Delegate of the Georgia Dental Association. He’s also served on the Executive Council of the Northern District Dental Society, and is a member of the President College of Diplomates of The American Board of Orthodontics.
Family Life
Dr. Skafias and his wife, Sylvia, enjoy running, skiing, traveling, visiting historical sites, and diving into a good book. He is passionate about giving back to community and the speciality of orthodontics.
