Eligibility for Braces with Veneers, Crowns, or Implants

Braces are so common, they’re practically a right of passage for kids and teens! But plenty of adults get braces too, and often after they’ve gotten other dental work done.If you’re wondering if you can get braces if you have crowns, veneers, or dental implants, getting braces as an adult can still be a possibility.

Can I get braces if I have veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin, permanent covers put over a tooth to improve its appearance. People typically get veneers to cover a tooth that is badly chipped and can’t be repaired, is misshapen or discolored.

If you want to get braces and you have veneers, you’re in luck. Most people with veneers can get braces. The only difference is that the bracket will be attached to your teeth using a special kind of adhesive that will allow the bracket to be attached and then later removed without damaging the surface of the veneer. Clear aligners are also an option for people with veneers.

Can I get braces if I have a crown?

Dental crowns are permanent caps that are placed on and around a damaged or weak tooth. Since the crown is placed on top of the natural tooth, the tooth is still able to be repositioned with braces or clear aligners. Many patients with crowns opt for clear aligners to straighten their teeth, because in rare occasions, using adhesive for brackets may damage the surface of the crown.

Can I get braces if I have dental implants?

A dental implant is a replacement tooth that is permanently embedded into the bone structure of the mouth. Dental implants are used to replace teeth that are so badly damaged that they needed to be removed.

Although a dental implant cannot be moved because it is implanted directly into the jaw bone, you can still get braces with implants and straighten your remaining teeth. If your implant itself is out of alignment, it may need to be removed and replaced to sit in the correct position, though this is uncommon.
